She was born in India in 1941 to a philanthropic family and educated at the University of Delhi. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history, political science and journalism. Her early choices in life were affected by witnessing human suffering during the partition of India. She began to see that, though humans do suffer from outside causes, there are inner ways to alleviate suffering through spiritual knowledge and practice. She also became interested in the power of spiritual knowledge to allow for connection with God.
She met the Brahma Kumaris when she was a teenager and began studying and serving with the BK’s while she was still in college. For over 60 years she has opened new fields of service for the organization, establishing a regional headquarters for the Americas in 1978 and representing the BK’s as an NGO at the United Nations from 1981.
She considers meditation and spirituality to be most valuable when they are integrated into life. Since 1998 she has supported an initiative for leaders called the Call-of-the-Time Dialogues and Retreats to provide spiritual sustenance and respite for those who have extensive spheres of influence in serving the world. Over a thousand leaders have been served through this initiative.
The same year, under her guidance, the Brahma Kumaris acquired Peace Village Learning and Retreat Center in the Catskill Mountains, two and a half hours north of New York City. Peace Village serves people from all walks of life and all religious and spiritual paths each year. Her gift is a far-reaching vision and the ability to bring people together to bring an idea to reality. In 2006 she had the inspiration to create a book of spiritual knowledge drawing on the extensive knowledge base of the Brahma Kumaris. Two years later, The Story of Immortality was released in print and in audio. The book has found its way into the hands people on all continents.
In March of 2020, in the face of the global covid pandemic, she initiated a nightly zoom broadcast of spiritual talks and meditation to sustain those who were unable to meet in person. The audience for Avyakti Parivar grew to include over a thousand nightly viewers from around the world.
